Crafted from bamboo, a resilient perennial grass plant, each piece in our bamboo silk rug collection has the same wonderfully soft, smooth texture. The lustrous material resembles traditional silk in appearance and feel, blending the benefits of fine silk with durable bamboo. 

Bamboo silk is a relatively new material possessing many of the same qualities seen in natural silk fibers used by rug artisans for thousands of years. We began using bamboo silk decades ago after discovering that the material meets our high quality standards and creates a beautiful sheen unique to the material. Our bamboo silk rugs, whether made of 100% bamboo silk or in a blend with wool, proudly stand alongside our other designs of the highest quality. 

The finish of bamboo silk rugs is similar to traditional silk but with a more conservative cost and the added benefit that the source material is sustainable and renewable. 

Since we first began using bamboo silk in our collection, Tufenkian artisans have created hundreds of beautiful rugs in 100% bamboo silk, a beautiful fiber we’ve used for over 15 years, as well as bamboo silk blends.

Lustrous, Durable Art Silk

Select producers create Tufenkian bamboo silk exclusively for us. These partners are experienced suppliers of this component of luxury handmade carpets. Using a meticulous process, the producers transform bamboo cellulose into filaments which are skillfully woven into yarn. This process creates what’s known as art silk, or artificial silk; the resulting material is called viscose. 

Bamboo silk is a superior type of viscose because it is composed of bamboo fiber rather than wood pulp. Because of its hydrophilic nature, bamboo silk avoids some of the negatives that may result from prolonged use of other types of viscose, such as the variety made from wood pulp. 

Our bamboo silk carpets also receive a special finishing to enhance performance. We’ve laboratory-tested our bamboo silk and determined its performance and wear suits high-traffic areas. While these exceptionally attractive carpets may not perform as well as our premium wool or natural silk products, their alluring sheen and texture allow us to create them at significantly lower price point than 100% natural silk rugs. We recommend professional cleaning of bamboo silk rugs.
